Bring Sustainability To The Workplace

It’s all well and good to start adopting more sustainable habits in the home. It’s your house, your castle, and you are in control.

The workplace, however, is a very different beast. While more offices are implementing sustainable practices, there are still many without any eco friendly initiatives.

Here are some ideas to inspire you to get sustainability into your workplace, even if you’re not the one in charge.

Lead by example

Take your own reusable sandwich wrap and shopping bags to work. Soon enough, they will catch somebody’s eye – hopefully the big boss’!

Suggest to a senior staff member how sustainable practices can help to boost staff productivity and even morale. You can always put your hand up to design and lead a new initiative yourself.

Office waste

One of the first things you can do is set up a recycling station. Have a bin for organic waste, glass bottles, plastic, paper and e-waste. This will ensure as much waste is recycled as possible.

Put post-it notes up in the kitchen reminding other staff to reduce waste and put their rubbish in the correct receptacle.

Team up

There’s nothing like a bit of competition to get everybody motivated. Create a few rival teams and see who can come up with the best sustainability solution for the office. Have a special incentive such as a drink or dinner out up for grabs and soon the ideas will be flowing.

Once an idea has been decided on, anyone who is interested can help put it into place. Maybe you’ll end up putting stickers onto light switches that say “Turn me off!” to remind staff, or create a car-pooling system for people in the same area.

With a little creativity and effort, you can make a huge difference in workplace sustainability at your place of work.
