Family Farming Key To 2014

If you want to live more sustainably, you can take a cue from the United Nations (UN). Every year they focus on an area they want to improve and in 2014 this focus will be on family farming.

Family farms are used to feed around 70 per cent of the world’s population and the UN say they are key to fighting world hunger and malnutrition.

Not only that but these farms can also help to encourage biodiversity, as they often use native seed varieties and native livestock breeds that have adapted to the various environments.

This biodiversity encourages natural pest control and enhances soil quality as well as water infiltration, plus it ensures these species will not be wiped out.

Most family farmers use a method known as crop rotation which helps to preserve the soil, ensuring the land remains sustainable for years to come.

These farmers focus on keeping the land healthy and on preventing any issues such as pests from taking root rather than dealing with these problems when they arise.

Organic family farms do not use pesticides which could be harmful to people as well as to the environment.

Instead they rely on natural methods to ensure the safety of their crops.

Organic farms in particular use less water to maintain their crops, which helps the sector to be more sustainable.

One way to support the family farming industry is to buy locally produced food where you can, which reduces your water consumption as there is less H2O used to transport these goods.

If you opt to use eco-friendly products such as reusable shopping bags you are only further helping the planet and contributing to make the world a more sustainable place.
