Food And Sustainability: How It All Interconnects

In a country where we’ve always had a never-ending, abundant supply of food, it’s not all too often we turn our minds to the sheer amount of resources required to produce it.

Not to mention the fact that an unequal distribution of wealth means many of us are surrounded by food, while others are starving. Almost 870 million people go to bed hungry each night and as the world’s population grows that number will continue to skyrocket.

Complicated issues of oil prices, crop yields, climate change, exploitation, markets, and conflict all contribute to inequality when it comes to food.

While many of these issues are societal and not easily solved by one well-meaning individual, there are ways in which you can empower yourself to make food and sustainability changes.

Help fix the food system

Your purchases as a consumer have power. Each person that chooses to buy ethical and eco friendly products is sending a message to companies large and small, saying they support sustainable goods.

We can save resources by being more careful about what we use and what we buy. Spend some time researching the products you buy and finding the most sustainable manufacturer and retailer possible. Let others know that you would like their companies to make the change to more sustainable principles.

At home you can make a substantial difference by watching your consumption of food and goods. Don’t buy large quantities of food if you know that some of it’s going to end up in the bin. Instead, buy what you need and what you know is going to last.

Finally, ditch the throwaway plastics that take significant resources, like coal and oil, to produce. Instead, use items like reusable shopping bags or sandwich wraps that eliminate the need for all that plastic.
Spread the word, food and sustainability changes such as these will leave the world a much healthier and fairer place.
