How To Make The Most Of Your Worm Farm

Many environmentally friendly gardeners like to make the most of eco friendly products, and take proactive actions around the household. So if you’ve got a case of ‘green fingers’, it’s likely you may have created a compost heap or worm farm to keep your plants looking lush and healthy.

A worm farm is a fantastic way to keep your garden in tip-top condition while reaping some eco friendly brownie points at the same time.

But how can the worm farm actually help your garden? There are plenty of ways to utilise the benefits provided by our squirmy garden friends – here are just a few ways to harness those benefits.

Dispose of your kitchen scraps

Instead of throwing your banana skins and apple cores away to rot in landfill, feed them to your worms instead. They think your old food is delicious – and then turn it into a lush compost for you to use on the garden!

Spread a layer on the lawn

Covering the lawn with a fine layer of compost can be a great way to condition your grass and keep it in great shape.

Use when potting plants

Mixed in with a little potting mix, compost from your worm farm makes a great nutrient-rich soil  for potting new plants. Use it for anything from a new herb garden or a floral hanging basket display to decorative plants kept inside the house.

Make your own fertiliser

It’s not just the resulting compost that can be utilised around the garden. Worm waste, or ‘castings’, are also helpful and can be turned into a homemade fertiliser that plants will thrive off. Simply mix the castings with water and drain into a watering can. Ideally, use a sieve such as a stocking to get rid of any large pieces. Use the resulting mix to pour around your favourite plants to give them a bit of a pep!
