Tips To Help You Have A Sustainable Winter

Winter brings about a raft of changes that can make our hearts drop along with the temperature. Not only can the season limit the time we spend outdoors, we also witness the annual rise in our monthly bills as we try to warm our homes and eschew walking or biking to work for driving in our toasty warm cars.

As you’ll already have guessed, some of the comforts we take for granted during winter don’t necessarily make for the most sustainable winter choices. With a little effort, however, we can keep things green this winter.

Here are a few sustainability tips for the chilly season.

Cut down on packaging waste

We all know how easy it is to grab a ready made meal or order a take away, but have you ever stopped to consider what happens to the packaging it comes in? Each bit of wrapping will most likely end up making its way to landfill, causing a pile of knock-on effects.

Just because it's raining does't mean we can't keep things green. Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean we can’t keep things green.

By striving to make our own tasty sustainable winter meals, such as stews, soups and the occasional pasta, we can limit the amount of packaged goods which end up in our kitchen.

By using your Onya reusable produce bags for all your fresh fruit and veg, you no longer have to use those flimsy supermarket bags.

Keep your driving hours down

According to an infographic by McCrindle Research, a staggering two in three Australians drive to work each day, with only 1 in 10 households getting by using public transport.

Given how many Australians have access to buses, trains and trams, there’s a strong chance if you live in an urban area, you can switch up your routine by interchanging driving days with catching public transport to work.

From region to region, McCrindle reported that the Northern Territory was leading the way for walking to work, with 11 per cent of people pounding the pavement.

As a nation however, only 14 per cent of us are using public transport as our main method to commute, which leaves a lot of room for improvement.

Make sure you grab your reusabel sandwich wrap packed lunch and toss it in your Onya backpack before you head out the door!

Energy efficiency at home

There are a lot of great alternatives out there when it comes to heating your home for a more sustainable winter.

Keep things warm by ensuring your house is properly insulated, as well as taking simple precautions such as closing off areas which don’t need heating and by drawing the curtains once the sun goes down to trap the heat inside. You can also check out alternatives to electricity such as solar solutions for your hot water and indoor heating.
