3 ways to encourage eco friendly practices in the office

Does your company want to be a part of the world's growing eco friendly movement, which places sustainability front of mind? Environmentally conscious principles are not only becoming more popular amongst companies, but also for consumers, who are now increasingly on the lookout for organisations that make ethical choices.

With this in mind, you might want to find ways to make your business more 'planet positive', with a company culture that works towards a healthier Earth for everybody.

Here are three ways you can encourage more eco friendly practices around the office – keep in mind there are many others, so don't be afraid to get creative.

1 – Implement eco friendly promotional products for use

Companies use promotional products all the time to get their brand exposure, and these are often tools that send a very clear message about business values. Common items are mousepads, lanyards and odds and ends that in many cases, don't get much use or are thrown away.

Making use of environmentally friendly promotional products, however, can send a very different message – that you care about the environment.

Why not opt for reusable plastic bags, which will come in handy for recipients at the supermarket and in day-to-day life. These reusable shopping bags and backpacks are made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET), which is a material gathered from recycled plastic bottles. They can be used time and time again, encouraging the user to avoid single-use plastic and instead opt for these kinds of alternatives that are better for the planet.

2 – Ban single-use bottled water

Does your office provide bottled water for staff or visitors? Ditch this bad and unnecessary habit and instead provide water that's filtered through the sink system, so staff can fill up their own reusable water bottles.

Alternatively, you could use a water cooler system that connects directly to the water supply so there's no need for cumbersome large plastic bottles. Make sure you don't provide single-use throwaway cups for the cooler, though! Instead, have some washable glasses on hand, or once again encourage use of personal reusable bottles.

Single-use bottled water uses up extensive resources in the production process, while the plastic itself goes on to take up to 1,000 years to break down in landfill or somewhere where it is littering the natural environment. When you can get quality water through the tap, and even filter it, this is simply unnecessary.

3 – Encourage innovation in the workplace

Sometimes your best source of ideas can be your staff themselves. Why not see if your employees have any great eco friendly ideas that can be implemented in the office?

You can even add a competitive element to this, providing a prize or incentive for individuals or teams who come up with the best idea for the company.

Examples might be creating an office recycling station, donating items that would otherwise be thrown away or taking on some power saving methods. Only using lights when necessary, running the dishwasher when full and turning on screens when needed are a few ways in which power usage in the workplace can be reduced.

By taking a few simple steps toward sustainability, your company can make all the difference when it comes to helping the environment. Lead by example and get creative about how you can make a change.

It's something that consumers and clients will appreciate, and something that can help build a stellar image and reputation for your organisation. Essentially, everyone's a winner when it comes to eco friendly practices in the office.
