Have you heard of Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate?

As humans we are an innovative species – constantly coming up with new solutions and ways to contribute positively to the world around us despite the problems and challenges we face.

One of the big issues we are facing in our world is the increasingly vast amount of waste we’re producing as populations grow and demand more.

Luckily however, there are a number of people out there working away on how we can ease this problem.

Where does that recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate come in?

Do you make sure to recycle those soft drink or juice bottles you buy when you’re in need of a sweet treat?

If so – great – because this plastic can be turned into recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (rPET) and used for other things. That’s much more sustainable than simply throwing a bottle away.

PET bottles are collected from recycling plants and then cleaned, sorted and crushed into small flakes. Then through a heating process they can be processed into yarn through which eco friendly bags can be made!

Due to this show of innovation, eco friendly bags which replace the need for plastic ones can be made from plastic bags. Are you impressed yet? That means less rubbish in the landfill, less energy used and fewer precious resources such as oil being wasted.

Production methods such as this are a great way of evolving the manufacturing process into one that values energy efficiency and environmentally friendly methods.

If you’d like to help to encourage this kind of practice, then you can choose to purchase products from companies operating sustainably – usually the packaging will signal if it does.

You can also contact suppliers to ask them about what kind of sustainable measures they take, and if they aren’t currently practising any, then encourage them to do so.
