Celebrate Anzac Day with treats for the whole family
Anzac Day is a time of remembrance for both Australians and New Zealanders, to commemorate the brave soldiers who lost their lives during the Gallipoli Campaign at the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915.
With this day comes a time to celebrate our heritage, people, families and country – and as we all know, one of Australia's favourite ways to mark a celebration is with a hearty feast of food!
Why not mark this historic day with a gathering of family and friends and some homemade treats? If you're lucky, there may even be enough left over to pop in your reusable sandwich wraps for the next day!
Number one on our list is the most traditional Anzac treat – the Anzac biscuit. Depending on which recipe you use, there are a few variations in ingredients and amounts, but the basis for these deliciously moreish bikkies always stays the same.
You'll need rolled oats, golden syrup, butter, sugar, coconut, butter and flour. Mix according to your chosen recipe, flatten on a lined oven tray and bake until golden and a little crispy. Delicious!
Orange and poppyseed cake
The bright red poppy is a common icon during the weeks surrounding Anzac Day each year, so why not make this sweet flower centre stage in your Anzac treats? An orange and poppy seed cake is a tempting treat that is bound to please all your guests.
Taste.com.au recommends using fresh orange juice, natural Greek yoghurt, finely grated orange rind, poppy seeds, eggs, butter, flour, baking powder and sugar to create your cake. Serve hot with freshly-brewed milky English tea.
A classic, airy lamington is a delicious addition to any Anzac Day tea, and what's better is they're super easy to make. All you'll need is flour, cornflour, eggs, sugar, salt and boiling water for the sponge. Once that's made, cut into squares and coat each with a chocolate or strawberry icing, then roll in a generous amount of fresh desiccated coconut.
