Creating a Circular Economy
As a company who prides itself on being sustainable, it is very important to us that we apply the principles of sustainability to every aspect of our business from packaging to products and work toward creating a company built around the goal of a circular economy.1
Most scholars describe circular economy by referring to the 3Rs: Reducing materials need and waste, Reusing products and product parts and Recycling materials.
A circular economy can be defined as:
“A regenerative system in which resource input and waste, emission, and energy leakage are minimized by slowing, closing, and narrowing energy and material loops; this can be achieved through long-lasting design, maintenance, repair, reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing, recycling, and upcycling” 2
To help us achieve this goal, we are proud to partner with TerraCycle to help us responsibly manage the end of life options of our products.
“TerraCycle are pleased to work with Onya to help them provide a responsible circular economy based solution for the end of life for the products they produce including silicone coffee cups and rPET bags, through our Zero Waste box programme. By doing this we are helping Onya reduce their environmental impact even further and achieve their goal of zero waste to landfill.”
TerraCycle Australia & New Zealand
TerraCycle offer free recycling programs funded by brands, manufacturers, and retailers like us, around the world to collect and recycle hard-to-recycle waste.
To date, over 80 million people are collecting in 21 countries and have collected billions of pieces of waste, raising over 21 million dollars for charities around the world.
The Onya products returned to TerraCycle will be either reused, upcycled, or recycled. Materials can often be used to recreate other products such as bags, pencil cases, benches, picnic tables, signs and even clothes in some cases.
For further information on how to return your old Onya products to us for recycling, please refer to our FAQ page.
