What does being B Corp certified mean?
We live in an age where information has never been more readily available, however it can be hard sometimes to work out if a company is as sustainable and ethical as they say they are.
B Corp offers companies like us an opportunity to prove to our customers that we are legitimately trying to do good in the world. It is not just us saying we are, it is an independent third party verifying it.
B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk or skin care.
B Corps like us are for-profit companies certified by the non-profit B Lab to meet very high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.
Due to the very rigorous standards set by B Corp it took us many hours of hard work over 7 months to finally achieve our certification – and we wouldn’t have it any other way! We believe it is having this focussed attention to detail that makes having B Corp certification worthwhile.
In a world where unintended consequences of certain actions can have devastating effects, it is incredibly important to us that we are meeting not only the high standards of production and operations we set for ourselves, but also exceeding the expectations of our customers when it comes to ethical business practices.
Today, there is a growing community of more than 3,000 Certified B Corps from 50 countries and over 130 industries working together toward 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business by being socially and environmentally responsible, and we are proud to be a part of it!
B Corp products are products from B Corp companies who are certified by the non-profit B Lab as voluntarily meeting higher standards of transparency, accountability, and performance. In Onya’s case our products are being manufactured as an ongoing solution to the problem of plastic waste build up and we are proud to be one of the certified companies under the B Corporation umbrella.
Can the Earth Really Afford So Much Plastic Waste?
Let’s face it; plastic isn’t going anywhere in a long while. It takes anything from 10 to 1000 years for plastic waste to decompose. This means most plastics will certainly be around longer than your lifetime and way beyond.
Quite a sobering thought, yet every day more and more plastic waste is being produced and ending up in landfills. Can the earth really afford such a huge build up of plastic waste? More importantly, is there anything we can do to prevent it? Reusable and sustainable single-use plastic alternatives, especially those from B Corp Certified companies, are playing an important role in trying to reduce and ultimately reverse the build up.
Reducing plastic waste that has already been produced by turning it into something useful that can be used for years, as well as decreasing new consumption of single use plastics, is a practical and achievable target in the effort to combat the problem of plastic pollution.
Environmentally Friendly Ways to Reduce The Waste
According to the 2016 Australian National Waste Report, generation of plastic waste was 107kg per capita, a figure that has likely grown since then. Ideally, an environmentally friendly way should be found to safely eliminate plastic waste. We are still a long way off from seeing that happen on a global level.
In the interim, those aware of the long-term negative implications and concerned for the impact this is having and will continue to have on the planet, have formulated a way to mitigate the negative effects.
By keeping the waste from the landfills and encouraging consumers to use products recycled from the plastic waste, awareness is being raised on the extent of the problem. A growing number of concerned manufacturers are finding ways to reduce this build-up by producing an exciting array of goods from recovered waste.
With single-use plastics currently being the biggest culprit for plastic waste build-up, creative and practical alternative products have been developed and are continuing to be developed to entice people away from their use.
B Corporation Products At the Forefront
B Corporation certification brings together people in business who are conscious that they have a role to play in offering an alternative to like-minded consumers. It allows consumers to easily identify and support companies they can trust are truly contributing to the earth’s sustainability.
This certification legally binds manufacturers to accountable, eco-friendly principles, not just in the manufacture of their products, but in the way their entire businesses impacts the world. This growing number of global partners join together to create a chain whose verified performance on social and environmental impact has been certified to be that of the highest standard.
At Onya, we seek to ensure that whatever part in the manufacture or supply chain we play, we are contributing positively to the overall reduction in plastic waste and acting as role models for others to be inspired to emulate. And we hope that it will empower you, our customers, to become ambassadors and advocates for responsible consumerism.
